About This CD
It was a lifelong dream of mine to create a more mainstream CD. I had written many songs in English about my experiences in meditative life. Herb Graham Jr. and I met in August 2001 and spent about 4 months talking, playing CDs, and discussing the intent of the project....(read more)

Backroads Music/Corte Madera, CA
After three CDs in the kirtan chant mode, Wah! switches gears and adds her exquisite touch and voice to current pop sounds. Backed by artists who play with Macy Gray and Alanis Morissette, Wah! brings heartfelt and thought-provoking lyrics to these mid-tempo grooves, trendy atmospheric sounds and smooth bass lines. A bit funky, soothing and soulful, "Opium" may not replace Madonna but it will get a lot of play, from dance & movement classes to travel time & social or sensual listening. 12/01/03

You probably know WAH! as a singer of sultry Indian chants, or as that beautiful woman who strums the guitar alongside Krishna Das. After spending a lifetime immersed in music, mostly of a divine or yogic nature, WAH! has just released her first mainstream album, Opium. Swapping Sanskrit verse for English lyrics and modern themes, the effect is, nonetheless, still meditative and otherworldly. Additional talent on this album includes Macy Gray's musicians and members of Alanis Morrisette's band, so that gives you some idea of the genre, except that WAH! injects something a little trippier to create a mellow groove that's luscious and highly addictive. 7/1/03

The music blew me away. Creatively, you've certainly tapped into a source that brings out the essence of life, about living and being real with each other. 1/20/03

Wah!, the yoga chant singer who performed in Little Rock in 2002, has made a bold step. Instead of love songs to the divine, she is singing velvety, rhythmic songs of love and life. Working with musicians from the bands of Macy Gray and Alanis Morrisette, Wah!'s new music is soulful in a contemporary R&B way. The new songs are steeped in personal experience and conveyed with a sultriness that her chant CDs only hint at. Her superb voice rises to the new setting with inspiring emotional directness and soulfulness. 1/3/03

Fans and people familiar with WAH!’s previous CDs might be surprised by the new sound, but for people who are hearing WAH! for the first time, they can expect to be blown away. It’s great music, no question about it. 4/20/02

Melissa Kozmon/Cleveland, OH Opium will blow you away with its beauty, melody & spirit (my personal favorite: Show up & Be Heard... wow!) 7/29/2003
TSianna Sherman/Cincinnati, OH I've been listening to your c.d. all day long... I think I've developed an Opium addiction. I'm just wondering how serious this is and if there will be a remedy cd to follow up on the current addiction? 1/13/03
Sudhir Jonathan Foust/Lenox, MA Listening and relaxing to your OPIUM CD -- for the umpteenth time. I just LOVE your voice and your presence. Having sensed the depth of your presence through who you are and your more traditional music, I have to say, you deliver something really potent in this music. It's spacious, deep and at the same time, without blinking, embraces the heart. Keep letting it rip...1/12/03
Susan Kenny/Boise, ID Wah's music has the most astonishing effect on me...I keep waiting to get tired of it - any of it - and it simply doesn't happen. I play this music more than I've ever played any music I've ever owned, and each time I listen I discover a new depth of meaning, a new depth of humanity and tenderness within myself, a new hope for the spirit of humankind. Her newest CD, "Opium", has the remarkable ability to open the listener's heart and keep opening it, with or without our conscious permission. How these songs (incredibly, every single one of them) can keep doing this over and over with each playing is a mystery to me, but I don't really even wonder why this is any more. I'm just grateful to have this music in my life; it has brought me "home" again and again and again, whatever may be going on in my life to distract me from who I am. "Opium" is an album full of honesty, simplicity, sophistication and intelligence all at once. Amazing. Thank you, Wah, for sharing your gifts with the world. You are definitely "showing up and being heard"!! 11/20/02
Rabbi Rami Shapiro/Los Angeles, CA Opium is wonderful. A real departure from your previous work, and no less beautiful. I listen to it over and over. B'Shalom. 10/1/02
Ann Morrison/Pacifica, CA I really like your new CD Opium. I usually just like a song or two on other CD's but I really, really like all of your songs. My favorites are Whipered, Leap of Faith, Is it Love and Open. You are so talented. YOU GO GIRL! Please keep making music.9/26/02
Tobias Fields/New York, NY I enjoyed listening to your new songs. Every time I listen, I enjoy it more. I like the downtempo pace and the sultriness of your voice. 4/7/02
Elena Brower, Virayoga/New York, NY Oh yes! This is totally what we listen to during yoga class. We are totally into it. 4/12/02
Carl Arnush/ Los Angeles, CA I am really digging the new CD. I've got to tell you, I have loved your current direction for some time so the idea of a change in direction made me a bit nervous. Foolish fears! The new music sounds just great WAH! I'm not just saying it. The beat, the textures, the chord structures, the flow and, of course, the best vocals going. 6/17/02
Arnie Goldstein/Chicago, IL Your voice and music bring the listener into a different state of feeling/experience. The songs and their meanings remain open-ended to the listener, allowing many interpretations. Recently, I found myself listening to Midstream and for some reason I slipped into some kind of “time suspension” where I thought I had listened to most of the tracks and realised I was only halfway through the first song. Don’t know what brought that on. I feel Wah!’s presence more and more as I listen to these songs. 6/4/02
