 PLANET YOGA

Karuna Music/Triloka Records offers a 2-CD compilation called Planet Yoga. The first CD features tracks from all my favorite chanters, people I have worked with throughout the years - Krishna Das, Deva Premal, David Stringer, Jai Uttal, Rasa, Bhagavan Das, Diana Rogers, Wah!. The second CD is all instrumental tracks, featuring beautiful music by Ali Akbar Khan, Benjy Wertheimer, and Steve Gorn. This will be a wonderful addition to anyone's CD collection.

Editorial Reviews

Light of Consciousness Magazine (Winter 2002)
Bhajans (devotional chants) come from the Bhakti (devotional) kirtan movement of India in which the Names of God are chanted over and over in praise and salutation. Some of the best Western interpreters of Indian chant - Krishna Das, Jai Uttal, Rasa, Wah! and Bhagavan Das -- are featured in this collection of bhajans along with a new wave of chants artists. Alternating rhythmic and lyrical styles, these chants fo Divine Mother, Shiva, Krishna, Sri Ram and Ganesha, and a lovely rendering of the Gayatri Mantra by Deva Premal, will fill you with inspiration and shakti. The variety of styles presented reveals how the kirtan movement has adapted in the West into an entirely new genre that is attracting more and more souls to this enthralling form of prayer.

Among many favorites, the silky voice of Wah! on "Jai Ma" transports the listener into the sweet Presence of the Mother of the Universe. Krishna Das, America's most beloved kirtan-wallah, raises the roof in two high-energy chants to Shiva, including a collaboration with Wynn Paris, "Prayer to Rudra." And Jai Uttal joins exquisite-voiced Indian singer Mala Ganguli in a duet to baby Krishna that is as sweet as it is unique!

Conceived as music for Yoga, Meditation and Peace, the liner notes feature illustrations of 21 yoga asanas. The second CD contains four evocative instrumentals for deep relaxation and meditation -- ambient soundscapes by Western artists melt into Indian classical music as Maestro Ali Akbar Khan brings a perfect close to this "aural yogic journey." Don't miss it.

Fan Reviews

nhtibbetts/Minneapolis, MN  I am a yoga teacher and am picky, picky, picky. It is hard to find a compilation CD (or any CD) that you can play through without the sour apple track that makes you bristle during class. These two are perfect. The first CD is beautiful...great fun chants, I actually like all of them...very uplifting before class...then the 2nd CD is just right during class. No annoying vocals or horns or screeching flutes, just a steady meditative pace, and no wimpy New Age tracks. Peace!
