Grass Valley, CA KVMR/89.5 FM "World Music" with George Olson

KVMR: Welcome to the show WAH! I have CD Krishna and Jai Jai Jai which are chanting. And then I also have Opium which is more concerned with life as we live it in America. Bandmembers from Alanis Morissette appear on that album-

WAH!: Yeah, it's a different perspective. The producer, Herb Graham Jr., really encouraged me to write songs about life instead of about spirituality. I have pursued the meditative state my every waking moment, and when I met Herb, he said, 'OK, that's all out the window. We want to hear about your life.' So, Opium has a different feel.

KVMR: I also understand your mother was a professional violinist. Did she also introduce you to a spiritual life?

WAH!: No, I kind of got that on my own. College and life opened me up to a lot of different experiences (opera, Gregorian chant, theatre, modern dance, classical Indian music, African music), but the spirituality developed on its own.

KVMR: Ou went to Africa, India, and then you lived in NY and worked with Angela Caponigro... And in 1995, you moved to Los Angeles and opened for Courtney Love, performed on Vancouver television. Then you toured with Krishna Das. Boy, you've really been -well- busy!

WAH!: Yes, when you put it all out there in a 3-minute span. (laughter) I'm a seeker. I don't mind trying things. If I get a hit I should work with somebody I jump into it. My life is guided internally. I want to find out what each experience has to offer. It might look chaotic from the outside, but it feels guided to me.

[Show Up & Be Heard]

KVMR: Great tune. I like the message. Earlier I played the first track from her latest CD Jai Jai Jai, 'Bolo Ram'. We've got a great concert this weekend for you ~ WAH! in Grass Valley, and she'll be playing in Marin as well... Wah!, thanks, it's been a pleasure.
