US STAR COMES TO CITY
West Brighton Truro & Mid Cornwall Weekend Preview/November 4, 2004
A concert with a difference takes place in Truro next week. A performer who has spent her lifetime immersed in music and spiritual practice, studying in the US, India and Africa will perform at Yoga Ltd, The Old Chapel, St Clement St, on Wednesday night. Wah! spent 15 years living in an ashram, studying yoga and meditation. She emerged in the late 1990s performing and collaborating wtih artists such as Krishna Das and Courtney Love. Her collaboration with producer Herb Graham Jr on the 2002 album Opium brought her music to the mainstream market. Using the musical talents of members of Macy Gray's and Alanis Morissette's bands, Wah! released a collection of mid-tempo trip-hop songs to express her unique perspective on life.
Wah! combines reggae, Hindu chatning and pop to create a unique mix of spiritual world music. NY Spirit Magazine said: "Wah! injects something a little trippier to create a mellow groove that's luscious and highly addictive."
The Truro concert - which will be followed by dates in Glastonbury and the Yoga Show at London's Olympia - will feature songs from her upcoming Unplugged release as well as Sanskrit chants from her other albums. The chanting is call-and-response and audience participation is encouraged but not required. Wah! said: "Chanting is the main devotional practice in India. In every temple, every home, there is usually some song being sung, some mantra being invoked. Creating a connection to Self is the goal of chanting, and the process is meant to be inclusive and festive. Although the chants are done in Sanskrit, it is not connected with any particular religion or group."
Tickets priced £10 are available from Yoga Ltd on 01872 321111.
